Oahu's Plastic Bag Ban

Oahu's Plastic Bag Ban

Another step forward for my beautiful island home!

DID YOU HEAR? Effective July 1, the City & County of Honolulu (so the entire island of Oahu) will no longer allow stores to give out “reusable,” “compostable,” or paper bags for free when making a purchase. The law forces stores to charge 15 cents per shopping bag. This law also goes further to completely ban “reusable” thick plastic bags by 2020.

I’m excited that the first stage of this law has finally gone into effect. BUT I’m wondering how much of a difference it will make if consumers are only charged 15 cents for the ultra-convenience of an awful plastic bag that could end up blown into the ocean & won’t break down in their lifetime. Hit me with your thoughts on the effectiveness of plastic bag bans in the comments below. I’ve loved reading about laws in other states and countries from comments on my Instagram post on this topic. Does your city/state/country have it all figured out? Please tell us your secrets
