How Did You Find Your Job? - Question Answered
Aloha! I’m Rachel and I’m an #ActualLivingScientist. I do behind the scenes work to help protect our environment through policy and regulation. I get a lot of DMs and emails asking how I got to where I am, and I could spend hours digging into that broad question, but I figured I’d share a small aspect of it here.
I can’t survive without lists, so that’s my first step in any decision I make - I research and make lists. When I briefly pursued the PhD route, I thought about the times that my eyes lit up and I dug into extra work because I was so interested. And I wrote down a list of those research topics. Then I spent weeks researching programs throughout the country and individual faculty members and their career publications, and when I found someone that seemed really compatible, I reached out. After deciding that I was done with school for now and I wanted to enter the workforce, I took the same approach. I started researching topics that interested me and I took note of the job title that these people carried. Then I was able to fine-tune my job search on Indeed by searching the exact titles that applied to my interests! And as you probably figured out, I ended up in Hawaii because I searched jobs all over the world. You never know where that open-ended Google search might lead you.
