Flipping the Script on Black Friday Shopping
Feeling overwhelmed by the Black Friday commercials and emails? Me too. We hosted an American Thanksgiving in the UK yesterday and it was so wonderful to eat, drink and be merry with dear friends. It really got me thinking about the priorities we have for the holiday season. Why buy a bunch of small gifts that your friends, family, coworkers, Secret Santa, etc. may only use a few times and then toss in the trash or the junk drawer? Our culture’s incessant call to buy buy buy is a problem. It’s hurting our pockets and it’s hurting our planet.
Instead, there are a large number of alternatives for meaningful gifts and acts of love to shower your friends and family with this holiday season. Maybe you mix up your Secret Santa this year and coordinate with a nonprofit that provides essentials to those in need. Host a potluck dinner and drinks with your friends to just enjoy each other’s company! I think the gift of “an experience” is one of the best to give and receive. For that, I say Groupon is your friend. But always call the company first before buying! Companies get a small cut of what Groupon charges, so most small businesses will offer the option to pay directly through them. This leads to my next bit of advice for gift giving - shop local and shop small! Supporting services and goods provided by small businesses gives a meaningful touch to the gift, and also usually means that you’re giving your money to a hard-working artisan or professional. How ethical of you! And chances are, these businesses have a much smaller carbon footprint in their production process than large commercialized companies. High five - you’re now eco-friendly too!
I’ll be posting more tips on Instagram throughout the weekend to help you navigate the craziness that is the start of Christmas season! Keep an eye on my IG stories too for great deals I’ve come across from companies that I support for their commitment to ethical and sustainable practices.
